My name is Krista, a dedicated Drowning Prevention Specialist since 2005 and the founder of Swim Synergy. As a mother of three, I am deeply committed to promoting water safety and preventing drowning through innovative education, advocacy, and community engagement. With over 18 years of experience, my journey in this field is deeply personal and enriched by my role as a parent. While I initially planned on a career in Clinical Child Psychology, my path shifted profoundly when I became involved in the Drowning Prevention Community.

Having been a near-drowning victim myself at the tender age of three, I carry a constant awareness of the dangers of water. This personal connection drives my commitment to teaching life-saving swimming and survival skills to infants, toddlers, children, and adults, especially those with a fear of water. This work is not just a profession for me; it is a deeply rewarding calling.

My teaching approach is further shaped by my volunteer work with San Diego Hospice and the Institute for Palliative Medicine, particularly on the pediatric team. Working closely with children facing life’s end has reinforced my commitment to preventing tragedies like drowning. I believe that while the risk associated with water can never be completely eliminated, it can be significantly mitigated through education, awareness, and effective swim instruction.

In my lessons, I aim to provide more than just swimming skills. I focus on instilling confidence, safety awareness, and survival techniques, treating each of my students with the same love and care I give to my own children.

My goal is to give every student a fighting chance against preventable water-related accidents by advocating for comprehensive prevention strategies, including protective barriers around pools, constant adult supervision, established rescue plans, and proficient swimming skills. Together, we can work towards creating a safer environment around water.

Emma

Emma is a Swim Synergy Certified Drowning Prevention Specialist known for her infectious energy and powerful ability to connect with children. Her diverse background—teaching volleyball camps in the Dominican Republic, helping build prosthetic limbs for children in Guatemala, directing sports camps in Colorado, and mentoring with Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego—speaks to her compassion, leadership, and unwavering positivity. She brings that same heart and discipline into every lesson, creating a space where children feel safe, capable, and excited to learn life-saving skills.

Emma’s commitment to water safety began as a deep-water lifeguard, where she performed 22 in-water rescues during her first summer. Paired with her pre-medical degree in Cardiovascular Technology from the University of South Carolina, she brings a unique, results-oriented approach to teaching. She also holds certifications in Basic Life Saving Skills, Clinical Medical Assisting, CPR, and has completed training as a Child Abuse and Neglect Mandated Reporter.

At the heart of every lesson, Emma focuses on building trust and safety while keeping the experience fun. Her goal is to turn swim lessons from a basic safety requirement into something kids genuinely look forward to every single time.

Katy

Katy is a Swim Synergy Certified Drowning Prevention Specialist with over 12 years of professional experience working closely with children and families. Her career has been built around one core mission: helping children develop real confidence, emotional safety, and life-saving skills that last.

After earning her Business Marketing degree from California State University San Marcos and spending five years in the corporate world, Katy chose to follow her true calling — working directly with children in meaningful, hands-on roles. She has since spent over a decade as a trusted childcare professional, tutor, and classroom volunteer, becoming known for her calm leadership, structure, and ability to connect deeply with the children she teaches.

With lifeguard experience and advanced training in water safety, Katy understands that drowning prevention goes far beyond swim strokes. She focuses on building automatic response, breath control, and composure in the water — skills that create true safety, not just surface-level swimming ability.

Katy brings patience, consistency, and individualized attention to every lesson. She believes every child deserves to feel strong, capable, and secure in the water — and she is committed to helping them build skills that can protect them for a lifetime.

Riley

Riley is a certified Aquatic Survival Instructor who blends athletic discipline with genuine care. With three years of varsity swim and water polo experience, she brings focus, structure, and consistency to every lesson. She shows up early, stays late, and gives 100% in the water—but what truly sets her apart is the way she meets each child with patience and encouragement. Riley builds more than skills; she builds trust, resilience, and the quiet confidence that helps children feel safe and capable in the water.

As a seasoned nanny and the oldest sibling in a big family, Riley has a natural gift for working with young children — especially those who are fearful or hesitant in the water. She’s CPR and First Aid certified, experienced with children who have special needs, and brings a calm, confident energy that puts both kids and parents at ease.

From first splashes to breakthrough moments, Riley brings structure, heart, and a steady hand that kids trust.
